Camping in Provence

We begin our second camping excursion this morning, getting in the car and heading towards Provence. Our campsite is only 3 hours away by car, but it’s really going to be a day of travel more than anything else, with sightseeing stops on the way. We make it as far as Aix en Provence by a little after noon, and we stop for lunch, going into town to look for a place to eat outside.

By mid afternoon, we are tasting olive oil after a tour at the Moulin Castelas olive oil mill in Les Baux de Provence, among the olive trees swaying in the breeze of what could be a light Mistral, if there is such a thing as a light Mistral.

By the late afternoon, we are setting up camp in La Sousta, a nice wooded campground just downriver from the Pont du Gard aqueduct. We walk down to the Gardon river as the sun gets low. Sam and Tony are skipping rocks across it, trying to reach the other side. We bring our chairs and just sit at the rocky riverbank and relax.

This has been the big test for us in the car, five people plus camping gear crammed into a small Opel for a long distance drive. It wasn’t so bad. Of course, I wasn’t in the back seat, but I think breaking up the trip into what felt like three smaller trips really helped. It’s been a great day.

We make a simple dinner at the camp site late in the evening. The wind is still blowing and it’s actually a little chilly, but it feels good.
